Mission Statement

Protecting the Intracoastal Waterway in NJ

Founded by Walter H. Wescoat - The NJICW strives to unite boaters, fisherman, families, concerned citizens & conservationists to protect and preserve the ICW as well as protect our rights to use & enjoy all 118 miles of the NJ Intracoastal Waterway.

Our mission is to make it possible for all boaters to be able to travel a safe and well maintained INTRACOASTAL WATERWAY and all connecting waterways.

By having a viable INTRACOASTAL WATERWAY it is possible to keep and maintain interconnecting waterways to docks, marinas and all boating facilities.

To work with all federal, state and local officials to promote funding, for the procurement of spoil sites and to help devise methods of disposing of dredging spoils. To work with and help promote funding for the Army Corps of Engineers to maintain the Intracoastal Waterway.

To lobby congress, state and local officials to promote the maintenance of the intracoastal waterways and all connecting waterways. TO WORK WITH ELECTED OFFICIALS AND THE BOATING INDUSTRY TO ESTABLISH A STATE BOATING FUND OUT OF THE ENORMOUS TAXES PAID BY THE BOATING PUBLIC. TO BE USED FOR MARINE IMPROVEMENTS. NO SUCH FUND NOW EXISTS IN THE STATE OF NEW JERSEY FOR MARINE FUNDINGL. ALL SUCH FUNDING ENDS UP USUALLY AS AFTER THOUGHTS AND THE NEED FOR SPECIAL LEGISLATION.

New Jersey waterways were down graded in 1991 from a depth of 12 feet mean low water to six feet M L W . To work and lobby to have them returned to the twelve foot depth at M L W. Allowing large deep draft sport vessels and possible commercial traffic. By tugs and barges. BUILDING A MUCH NEEDED AND VALUABLE MARINE RESOURCE.

To lobby that waterway surveys especially those done by the Army Corps of Engineers include both recreational boating as well as commercial boating uses of the waterways. Army Corps surveys now only include commercial boating use. With a waterway depth of six feet M L W it is not practical to have a large commrcial traffic. Thus giving a more accurate picture of the value of the waterway to the southern half of the state due to recreational use.

TO MAINTAIN THE INTRACOASTAL WATERWAY WEB SITE AND UPDATE IT TO INCLUDE PERTINENT WATERWAY NEWS.

TO LOBBY NEW JERSEY CONGRESSMAN TO JOIN THE NEWLY FORMED CONGRESSIONAL WATERWAY CAUCUS FORMED IN WASHINGTON TO PROMOTE WATERWAYS AND WATERWAYS FUNDING. NONE OF NEW JERSEYS THIRTEEN CONGRESSMAN ARE PRESENTLY REPRESENTING NEW JERSEY.

TO WORK WITH THE AIWW. THE SOUTHERN INTRACOASTAL WATERWAY FROM VIRGINIA TO FLORIDA. FOR FUNDING AND ITS CONTINUED ALLOWED 12 FOOT DEPTH.
